Dr. Ulrich Stephani is Professor for Neuropaediatry and Director of the Department of Neuropaediatrics at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Campus Kiel. In 2012, he was elected as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and in May 2013 he became Dean.

After studying Medicine at Hannover Medical School from 1971 - 1975, at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (1975-1976), from where he graduated with his doctoral degree in 1978, and at the Freie Universität Berlin (1976 - 1977), Dr. Stephani worked initially at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1977 - 1985. After transferring to the Pediatric Clinic at the Georg August University Göttingen, in 1989 he completed his paediatrics consultancy training and became a Consultant in the paediatrics department specialising in neuropaediatrics. In 1990 Ulrich Stephani qualified to teach at professorial level in the field of paediatrics and in the same year he was appointed as a university lecturer. In 1992, he accepted a position as Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Kiel University.

The object of his research activities is the investigation of the genetic causes of epilepsy in children and adolescents. Another focal point is the functional imaging of the young brain in neurological and psychiatric illnesses such as epilepsy or attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
