Joachim Thiery has been full-time Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Kiel University since April 2020. In addition, he is the scientific director and speaker of the Medical Campus Kiel of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). He is also member of the Executive Board of the UKSH.

Joachim Thiery was director of the Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics of the University Hospital Leipzig until 2019. He served for many years as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Leipzig University. He was elected senator of the University, elected member of the DFG review board and member of the UKSH supervisory board.

After studying medicine and completing his doctorate at Heidelberg University, Joachim Thiery worked from 1981 to 1989 at the Centre for Internal Medicine of the University Medical Center Göttingen in the field of Clinical Chemistry. In 1989 he moved to University Hospital Munich-Grosshadern, where he qualified as professor (Habilitation) in 1995 after a postdoc fellowship at the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, UCSF San Francisco. In 2000, he was appointed to the C4 professorship for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Leipzig University. In 2010, Joachim Thiery completed the master's degree program "Health Care Management" at the University of Bayreuth with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

The scientific work of Joachim Thiery covers the entire spectrum of lipid metabolism and cardiovascular diseases in more than 300 publications. His work focuses in particular on experimental and clinical genome research of atherosclerosis and metabolism. He pursues new therapeutic concepts and the application of innovative biomarkers for risk detection and prevention of heart attack. His scientific work was honored with several prizes.
