The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery deals with conditions, injuries or misalignments of all structures in the oral cavity, the jaw and the face. The Department uses current and futuristic concepts for associated early identification, diagnostic, treatment and aftercare procedures and this work is closely integrated with the UKSH competence centres such as the Krebszentrum Nord/Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Leading medicine describes Kiel's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as one of the top three departments for oral and maxillofacial surgery in the country.

The Department is also involved in the Cluster of Excellence "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation" and in multiple international co-operations.

In March 2014, the first professorship for health services research in dentistry “prevention and care in dentistry” (Prof. Dr. med. dent. Katrin Hertrampf, MPH) was established.

Research activities focus on bone replacement and building methods, the use of stem cells, tissue engineering, reconstructive surgery, health services research and quality of life studies.
