Department of Orthodontics

  • Prof. Dr. Helge Fischer-Brandies

The Department of Orthodontics is located in the Zentrum für Zahn-, Mund- und Kieferheilkunde (ZMK, Centre for Dental and Oral Medicine), on the UKSH's Kiel campus. It specialises in treatments for orthodontic and dental misalignments in children, adolescents and adults. The Department also offers special consultation hours for conditions of the temporomandibular joint, cleft lip and palates, cranio-facial anomalies and dysgnathias.

An interdisciplinary approach is used for treatment, with a team of orthodontists, prosthodontists, oral surgeons, physiotherapists, neurologists and psychologists where necessary.

The Department is involved in the "Kompetenzzentrum Funktionale Oberflächen" (Functional Surfaces Competence Centre) research project. Other research areas are the stress and strain analysis of the "tooth - periodontium - jaw bone" system, investigations on oral health-related quality of life and computer-controlled production of orthodontic arc sequences.
