The Department of Internal Medicine III, specialising in cardiology and angiology, is a maximum care centre that offers a broad range of clinical care to patients with cardiovascular conditions. In addition to the treatment of coronary heart diseases, it also specialises in the treatment of myocardial weaknesses, myocardial diseases and cardiac arrhythmias. Minimally invasive cardiac valve treatment is a particular speciality.

Research focuses on understanding the molecular causes of myocardial diseases and cardiac insufficiency. As part of the National Genome Research Network the department collaborates with many leading national and international institutions. In addition to these research activities, many clinical studies are also conducted in the area of acute coronary syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac insufficiency.

The Department of Internal Medicine III is a unit of the DZHK - German Centre for Cardiovascular Research, together with the Universität Hamburg and the Universität zu Lübeck. This BMBF-supported initiative of the Deutsche Zentren für Gesundheitsforschung (German Centres for Health Research) represents a pioneering reinforcement of translational cardiovascular research in Kiel.
