The Department of Ophthalmology in Kiel was founded in 1888 and today it is equipped with the most modern facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of all eye-related issues. The Department is a maximum medical care facility. It treats cataracts and also places special emphasis on the diagnostics and treatment on conditions of the retina, vitreous body and the cornea, inflammations, tumours and glaucoma and eye muscle weaknesses.

Research is focused on conditions of the posterior segment of the eye, especially treatment of the age-related macular degeneration and conditions of the vitreo-retinal interfaces. The Department has set up a basic research laboratory, an ophthalmopathological laboratory and a cornea bank. The Department has been involved in numerous national and international treatment studies for several years.
