Department of Urology

Director:

  • Prof. Dr. Klaus-Peter Jünemann

The range of services of the Department of Urology covers the entire spectrum of diagnostics and treatment of urological conditions in adults and children, including uro-oncological chemotherapy. Uro-oncology represents an important treatment speciality, whereby the extended lymph node surgery is particularly important in advanced stages of prostate, bladder and penile carcinomas.

Physicians in the Department have proven expertise in the field of what is referred to as salvage operations in PSA recurrence or recurrence of bladder carcinoma and are one of the leading departments in the field of sentinel lymphadenectomy. The 'Kiel Concept' was developed for the rehabilitation of erectile function following radical prostatectomy. It trains erectile function using PDE 5 inhibitors (Viagra®) and has been used successfully for many years.

The da Vinci®  Si Surgical System is used for sparing removal of the prostate and for surgery on the bladder and kidneys. This robot-assisted surgical system is currently the latest development in the field of minimally invasive surgery in the world. The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein is the only European clinic which, at the start of 2013, launched the da Vinci surgical system simultaneously in three core areas - urology, gynaecology and surgery.

The Kiel Department of Urology has been certified by the Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Cancer Association) as a Centre for Prostate Cancer and is partnered with the Onkologisches Zentrum (Oncology Centre) on the Kiel campus. Interdisciplinary work ensures that each patient benefits from the expertise of all cancer care disciplines.

The Department is also a certified Centre for Continence and Pelvic Floor of the Deutsche Kontinenz Gesellschaft  (German Continence Association) with special expertise in the field of incontinence diagnostics and treatment in male, female and child patients.

The Department is actively involved in numerous national and international clinical studies and research projects and operates its own neuro-urological research laboratory.
