The Institute of Epidemiology combines genetic epidemiological and classic epidemiological research within the context of chronic illnesses.

The fields of inflammatory diseases and cardiovascular diseases are particular areas of research focus. The Biobank popgen is an essential research resource that is located in the Institute of Epidemiology. Popgen is also linked to the cluster of excellence Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation.

Kiel University and the Institute of Epidemiology participate jointly with the Universität zu Lübeck in the National Cohort (NaKo). The NaKo Study is a nationwide population study in Germany, with the aim of investigating the causes of widespread diseases of modern society, in order to be able to prevent them, detect them at an early stage and develop appropriate treatments.
