The Department of Internal Medicine I  is one of the largest internal medicine departments in Schleswig-Holstein and offers a broad mix of designated focus areas. With gastroenterology, hepatology and pneumology, clinical infectiology and endocrinology/diabetology, nutritional medicine and geriatric medicine, in addition to internal acute and intensive medical care, it makes a broad contribution to general internal maximum care at the UKSH, Campus Kiel.

The Department collaborates with the other UKSH departments, in particular with the other three departments of internal medicine. Resident physicians in special outpatient clinics can also consult the rest of the team when assessing special cases.

Research focus is in the field of Inflammation Medicine and Geriatric Medicine. By transferring the research results from fundamental research to interdisciplinary medical care, the department is dealing with future challenges in medicine. The Department of Internal Medicine I has a leading role in the Cluster of Excellence 'Inflammation at Interfaces'.

The Department offers clinical introductory courses, examination courses and basic and specialist lectures to students of Medicine. It also provides training during the practical year and Consultant training.
